Most memorable on-screen dogs

Some people spend most of their lives trying to perfect their acting ability enough just to be recognized for their talents. Year after year, they accept small roles in the hope of one day getting their big break, with many never achieving that goal. Perhaps if they were dogs, they’d have an easier time of it. Plenty of canines bag parts without much effort, and they often end up being the most memorable character on screen.

Frank (Men In Black)

We’re not sure if Frank from the sci-fi action film series ‘Men in Black’ inspired people’s current love of pugs, but he certainly didn’t do the breed any harm. This sassy, hilarious canine was a favorite in the early films thanks to his witty remarks and passionate performance of ‘I Will Survive.’ Although the character was actually an alien disguised as a dog, that didn’t change how cute he looked in a suit. Those movies wouldn’t have been the same without him.

Santa’s Little Helper (The Simpsons)

Considering that the animated series ‘The Simpsons’ has been on the air for 30 years, it’s no surprise that it has one of the most memorable on-screen dogs around. We’re of course talking about Santa’s Little Helper, or Santos L. Halper as he was initially known. The character came into the show in the very first episode after he lost Homer a lot of money. Thankfully, the love he’s given The Simpson family – Bart, in particular – over the last few decades has more than made up for that.

Toto (The Wizard of Oz)

Toto might not have been the main character in fantasy film ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ yet he still managed to be one of the movie’s most memorable additions. He was Dorothy’s beloved sidekick who stood by her side as she explored the confusing and mystical world of Oz. He may have been a bit more apprehensive of the strange new land than his human companion, but that’s just because he had Dorothy’s back. He refused to let any harm come her way, even if there was little that he could do to stop it.

Lassie (Lassie)

When it comes to famous movie dogs, they don’t get much bigger than Lassie. After all, there was an entire TV show and film series that revolved around this canine who was famous for always coming to the rescue. Lassie enjoyed massive success in the ’40s and ’50s, with the original film grossing $4.5 million at the worldwide box office. The character was so beloved that the name Lassie is now synonymous with the Rough Collie breed. Of course, not all of these dogs wholly live up to the animal’s legacy.

Most memorable on-screen dogs

Scooby-Doo (Scooby-Doo)

If Lassie is the most famous dog on the big screen, Scooby-Doo is the most famous dog on the small screen. He might be an animated canine, but that hasn’t done anything to hurt his popularity. In fact, it’s probably made him more beloved. The ‘Scooby-Doo’ franchise has been around since the late ’60s and spawned many different shows, TV movies, and even a few live-action films. The treat-loving TV dog has given Great Danes everywhere a good name, and we expect that will continue so long as ‘Scooby-Doo’ is on the air.

Plenty of people around the world love dogs, so it’s no wonder there have been so many memorable canines in the media. We simply can’t get enough of these four-legged friends.
